Thyroid nodules are abnormal growths within the thyroid gland that are very common, found in up to 50 percent of adults on ultrasound. The vast majority of thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous) and cause no symptoms. However, some nodules can be overactive (producing excess hormone), grow large enough to cause neck pressure or swallowing difficulty, or in about five percent of cases, may be cancerous. We evaluate nodules with thyroid function blood tests, high-resolution ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy when indicated to determine whether treatment or monitoring is appropriate.
