Open MRI: Comfortable Imaging Without Compromising Quality
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools in modern medicine, producing detailed images of soft tissues, organs, and structures that other imaging modalities cannot visualise. However, the traditional closed-bore MRI scanner, which requires patients to lie inside a narrow cylindrical tunnel for 30-60 minutes, creates significant anxiety for a substantial proportion of patients. Studies estimate that 5-10% of all MRI appointments are cancelled or terminated early due to claustrophobia, and many more patients endure significant distress to complete their scans. Open MRI was developed specifically to address this challenge.
Open MRI systems use the same fundamental magnetic resonance physics as closed scanners. A powerful magnetic field aligns hydrogen atoms in the body, radiofrequency pulses temporarily disturb this alignment, and the signals emitted as atoms return to their resting state are captured and processed into images. The key difference is architectural: instead of a narrow tube surrounding the patient, open systems use magnets positioned above and below, with open sides that allow patients to see the room, breathe freely, and feel connected to their environment throughout the examination.
Modern open and wide bore MRI systems have significantly narrowed the image quality gap that previously existed compared to standard closed scanners. Advanced receiver coil technology, improved gradient systems, and sophisticated software algorithms now enable open MRI to produce diagnostic-quality images for the vast majority of clinical indications. Brain, spine, joint, and abdominal imaging can all be performed effectively on open systems. The choice between open and closed MRI should be based on patient comfort needs balanced against the specific imaging requirements of the clinical question.
At DCDC Dubai Healthcare City, we believe that patient comfort and diagnostic excellence are not mutually exclusive. Our open MRI service is designed for patients who need the clinical information that only MRI can provide but who cannot tolerate the confined environment of a standard scanner. We have created an imaging environment that prioritises the patient experience, from the initial welcome to the final report delivery, while maintaining the high diagnostic standards that referring physicians and patients depend on.

Questions frequentes
Questions courantes sur Open MRI a Dubai.
Open MRI delivers diagnostic-quality images suitable for the majority of clinical indications including brain, spine, joint, and abdominal imaging. Modern open and wide bore MRI systems have closed the image quality gap significantly compared to earlier generations. For routine diagnostic purposes, the images are fully adequate for accurate diagnosis. In rare cases requiring extremely high-resolution imaging of very small structures, your radiologist may recommend a standard closed MRI with a higher field strength. We will always advise you honestly about the best option for your specific clinical needs.
Open MRI scan times range from 30-60 minutes depending on the body area being examined. Brain MRI typically takes 30-40 minutes, spine MRI 30-45 minutes, knee or shoulder 30-40 minutes, and abdominal MRI 40-60 minutes. These durations are similar to standard closed MRI. The key difference is that you can see your surroundings throughout the scan, reducing anxiety and making the experience more tolerable. We build in time for comfort breaks if needed, particularly for longer examinations.
Yes, the open design allows a family member or companion to remain in the scanner room throughout your examination. This is particularly beneficial for children who feel more secure with a parent nearby, elderly patients who appreciate the reassurance, and anyone with anxiety who finds comfort in having a familiar person present. The accompanying person will be screened for MRI safety (metal objects, pacemakers) and provided with ear protection. They can sit comfortably within your view during the scan.
Yes, Open MRI can image all major body regions including the brain, entire spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), all major joints (knee, shoulder, ankle, hip, wrist, elbow), abdominal organs (liver, kidneys, pancreas), and pelvic structures. Our subspecialty radiologists will confirm that open MRI is appropriate for your specific clinical indication. In the vast majority of cases, the open scanner provides all the diagnostic information your doctor needs for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Open MRI is ideal for patients with claustrophobia or anxiety about enclosed spaces, individuals with larger body habitus who need more physical space, children who need a parent nearby for reassurance, elderly patients who prefer the open design, anyone who has previously failed to complete a closed MRI due to panic or discomfort, patients with PTSD or panic disorder, and those with shoulder injuries who cannot position comfortably in a narrow bore. If comfort is a priority for you, Open MRI may be the right choice.
Open MRI is equally as safe as standard closed MRI. It uses the same magnetic field and radiofrequency wave technology to create images, with absolutely zero ionising radiation. There is no difference in safety between open and closed MRI designs. The same precautions apply regarding metal implants, pacemakers, and metallic foreign bodies. MRI is safe for repeated scans and can be performed on patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly, without cumulative risk. The only general contraindication is the presence of certain non-MRI-safe metallic devices.
Reports are typically available within 18-24 hours and are sent directly to your referring physician. Same-day reporting is available for urgent clinical situations and critical findings. Each scan is formally reviewed and reported by a subspecialty radiologist with expertise in the specific body region imaged. Your report includes detailed findings, measurements, clinical interpretation, and recommendations for any follow-up. Images can be provided on CD or accessed through our digital platform.
For insurance coverage, most providers require a physician referral specifying the body region and clinical indication. Referrals from any licensed physician including GPs, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, and other specialists are accepted. If you do not have a referral, our in-house doctors can evaluate your symptoms and provide one, often during the same visit. Self-pay patients may book directly without a referral. We accept direct billing with over 20 major insurance providers.
