Blood tests measuring specific IgE antibodies test for a broad panel of allergens from a single blood sample and are useful when skin testing is not possible, such as during antihistamine use or with widespread skin conditions. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate test based on your symptoms and medical history.

For skin prick testing, you must stop antihistamines five to seven days before testing as they suppress skin reactions and can produce false negative results. Common antihistamines include cetirizine, loratadine, and fexofenadine. Continue other medications unless your doctor advises otherwise. Blood-based IgE tests are not affected by antihistamines, so no medication changes are needed. Bring a list of suspected triggers and note when and where your symptoms are worst to help guide testing decisions.

Yes, skin prick testing is very safe and has been used for decades in allergy diagnosis. Blood IgE testing has no age restrictions.
