The OPG is one of the most widely used imaging tools in dentistry because it provides a comprehensive overview in a single image. It is often the first diagnostic step for patients presenting with jaw pain, suspected fractures, or generalized dental complaints. The panoramic format allows your dentist to compare the left and right sides of the jaw, assess symmetry, and identify abnormalities that may warrant further investigation with targeted imaging such as periapical X-rays or CBCT.
OPG imaging plays an important role in periodontal disease assessment, as it shows the level of alveolar bone around each tooth. Progressive bone loss is a hallmark of periodontitis, and serial OPG images taken over time help your dentist monitor the disease and evaluate whether treatment is stabilizing the condition. The panoramic view also captures the maxillary sinuses and nasal cavity, which means incidental findings such as sinus pathology can be identified and referred for further evaluation.

Understanding OPG X-Rays: How Panoramic Dental Imaging Works
An orthopantomogram (OPG) is a panoramic dental X-ray that captures the entire mouth in a single two-dimensional image. The machine uses a rotating arm that moves around your head while you stand still, and the X-ray source and detector work together to produce a flat image of the curved jaw structures. This technique is known as tomographic imaging, where only the structures within a specific focal plane appear sharp, while objects in front of or behind that plane are blurred out.
The resulting panoramic image displays all the upper and lower teeth, the mandible (lower jaw), maxilla (upper jaw), temporomandibular joints, maxillary sinuses, and portions of the nasal cavity. Because the entire dental arch is captured in one exposure, OPG is one of the most efficient imaging techniques for obtaining a broad overview of oral health.
Digital OPG systems, like the one used at DCDC, produce images instantly with lower radiation than older film-based systems. The digital format also allows your dentist to adjust brightness, contrast, and magnification on screen, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Images are stored electronically and can be easily shared with specialists or compared with previous scans to track changes over time.
While OPG provides an excellent overview, it is a two-dimensional image of three-dimensional structures, which means some distortion and magnification are inherent. For procedures requiring precise spatial measurements, such as dental implant placement, your dentist may recommend a supplementary CBCT scan. However, for screening, routine dental assessments, and many treatment planning scenarios, OPG remains the gold standard.
Conditions and Indications for OPG X-Ray
Impacted Wisdom Teeth
Evaluate the position, angulation, and relationship of third molars to the mandibular nerve canal and adjacent teeth before deciding on extraction or monitoring.
Periodontal Disease
Assess generalized or localized alveolar bone loss around teeth, helping stage the severity of periodontitis and plan treatment including scaling, root planing, or surgery.
Dental Implant Preliminary Assessment
Provide an initial overview of available bone height and the location of anatomical landmarks before more detailed 3D imaging with CBCT for final implant planning.
Orthodontic Evaluation
Identify missing, extra, or unerupted teeth, assess root lengths and jaw relationships, and plan orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners.
Dental Caries Detection
Detect cavities between teeth (interproximal caries) and under existing restorations that may not be visible during a clinical examination alone.
TMJ Disorders
Visualize the shape and position of the mandibular condyles and detect bony changes such as flattening, erosion, or osteophytes associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
दुबई में OPG X-Ray के बारे में सामान्य प्रश्न।
The OPG scan itself takes just 10 to 20 seconds, during which the machine rotates once around your head while you stand still. Your total visit time is approximately 5 to 10 minutes, which includes registration, removing metal objects from the head and neck area, positioning at the machine with a chin rest and bite guide, the scan, and a brief quality check. There is no recovery time needed, and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterward. The digital image is available instantly, and if your dentist is in the building, they can often review it with you right away.
Yes, OPG is one of the lowest-radiation dental imaging techniques available. Modern digital OPG systems, like the one used at DCDC, deliver even less radiation than older film-based panoramic machines. The effective dose from a single digital OPG is comparable to just a few days of natural background radiation that everyone receives from the environment. This makes OPG safe for routine use in adults and, when clinically indicated, in children as well. Our equipment is regularly calibrated and maintained to ensure optimal image quality at the lowest possible radiation dose, following the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
Preparation is very straightforward. You will need to remove all metal objects from the head and neck area before the scan, including jewelry, earrings, necklaces, eyeglasses, hearing aids, hairpins, and removable dental appliances such as dentures, retainers, or partial dentures. Fixed metalwork such as braces, crowns, or bridges can remain in place. No fasting is required, and you can eat, drink, and take your medications normally before the appointment. The most important step is to let our team know if you are pregnant or suspect you might be, as we may recommend delaying non-urgent imaging as a standard precaution.
An OPG provides a comprehensive panoramic view of your entire mouth and surrounding structures in a single image. It shows all upper and lower teeth, including their roots and the bone surrounding them; both jaw bones (mandible and maxilla); the temporomandibular joints (TMJs); the maxillary sinuses; the nasal cavity; and portions of the surrounding facial skeleton. Dentists use this broad overview to detect cavities, assess bone levels for periodontal disease, evaluate wisdom teeth, identify cysts or tumors, check for jaw fractures, and plan treatments including orthodontics, implants, and extractions. It is often the first imaging study ordered during a comprehensive dental examination.
No, an OPG is completely painless. During the scan, you stand at the machine and place your chin on a small rest while gently biting on a plastic guide that helps position your teeth correctly. The rotating arm moves smoothly around your head for 10 to 20 seconds. You do not feel anything during this process, and no injections, contrast agents, or sedation are needed. The machine has an open design, so there is no enclosed tunnel, which makes it comfortable even for patients who experience claustrophobia. Children and elderly patients can usually complete the scan without difficulty.
OPG X-rays are generally avoided during pregnancy as a precautionary measure, even though the radiation dose is very low and the beam is directed away from the abdomen. If you are pregnant or think you might be, always inform our team before any imaging is performed. In most cases, your dentist will recommend postponing routine OPG imaging until after delivery. If there is a genuine dental emergency during pregnancy, such as a severe infection or trauma, the clinical team will carefully weigh the benefits against the minimal risks and may proceed with appropriate protective shielding. Your health and the safety of your baby guide every decision.
The digital OPG image is available immediately after the scan and can be viewed on screen within seconds. If your referring dentist is in our facility or connected through our digital platform, they can access the image right away. The formal written report, prepared by a subspecialty-trained maxillofacial radiologist, is typically available within 18 to 24 hours. For urgent cases, such as suspected fractures or acute infections, we offer expedited same-day reporting. Both the images and the report are delivered electronically to your referring clinician, and you can request a copy for your personal records at reception.
A referral from your dentist or doctor is required if you want the scan to be covered by insurance. Your referring clinician will provide a prescription that specifies the reason for the imaging, which helps our radiologists provide a focused and clinically relevant report. If you are a self-pay patient, you may contact us directly to arrange an appointment, and our team can help guide you through the process. For insurance patients, our administrative team handles the pre-authorization process with your insurer before your visit, so you know your coverage status in advance and can avoid unexpected costs.
