A transducer (probe) sends sound waves into the body, and the returning echoes are processed by a computer to form detailed images of organs, blood vessels, and tissues. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound does not use ionising radiation, making it one of the safest imaging modalities available and suitable for repeated use in pregnancy, paediatric, and routine monitoring contexts.
Abdominal ultrasound is one of the most commonly requested diagnostic scans worldwide. It evaluates the liver for fatty changes, cirrhosis, and masses; the gallbladder for stones and inflammation; the pancreas for cysts and tumours; the spleen for enlargement; and the kidneys for stones, cysts, and obstruction. Fasting before the scan ensures the gallbladder is fully distended and gas in the stomach and intestines is minimised, improving image clarity.
Thyroid ultrasound has become an essential tool for evaluating thyroid nodules, which are found in up to 50 percent of adults when screened by ultrasound. The scan assesses nodule size, composition (solid vs cystic), vascularity, and features that may suggest malignancy. It also evaluates overall thyroid size and texture, which is relevant for conditions like Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.
