A routine urinalysis includes visual examination (color, clarity), dipstick chemical analysis (pH, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, nitrites, leukocyte esterase, bilirubin), and microscopic examination (red/white blood cells, bacteria, casts, crystals). It detects UTIs, kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, liver disorders, dehydration, and kidney stone tendencies from a single non-invasive sample.
Wash hands and clean the genital area with the provided antiseptic wipe. Begin urinating into the toilet, then catch the middle portion in the sterile container without stopping the stream.
Use a clean collection device over the toilet to catch the stool. Using the container scoop, transfer a walnut-sized portion, selecting any abnormal-appearing areas.
Urine microalbumin detects very small amounts of albumin protein leaking through damaged kidney filters (glomeruli), the earliest sign of diabetic nephropathy and hypertensive kidney disease. Normal is below 30 mg/g creatinine; 30-300 is microalbuminuria; above 300 is macroalbuminuria.
Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure globally. Chronically elevated blood sugar damages kidney glomeruli, causing albumin leakage.
