High cholesterol is one of the leading modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death worldwide and a significant health concern in the UAE. At Doctors Clinic Diagnostic Center in Dubai Healthcare City, our cholesterol management program provides comprehensive lipid profile testing, cardiovascular risk assessment, and evidence-based treatment plans that combine medication optimization with practical lifestyle modifications tailored to life in Dubai.

Dyslipidaemia, the medical term for abnormal cholesterol and lipid levels, encompasses several patterns including elevated LDL (bad cholesterol), low HDL (good cholesterol), high triglycerides, and mixed presentations. Each pattern carries different cardiovascular risks and requires a tailored treatment approach. Our Internal Medicine specialists perform detailed lipid analysis beyond the standard panel, including lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein B, and advanced lipid particle testing when indicated, to provide the most accurate cardiovascular risk picture for each patient.

Located in Building 64, Block A of Dubai Healthcare City, a 10-minute drive from Dubai Mall and easily accessible from Oud Metha and Umm Hurair 2, our clinic offers same-day lipid profile testing with rapid results. We use validated cardiovascular risk calculators to determine your 10-year and lifetime risk of heart attack and stroke, which guides treatment intensity. Whether you need dietary and exercise guidance, statin therapy, combination lipid-lowering medication, or management of statin side effects, our specialists create plans that are both medically optimal and practical for your daily life.

The UAE faces a particularly high burden of cardiovascular risk factors. Studies indicate that up to 40 percent of adults in the Emirates have dyslipidaemia, driven by dietary patterns rich in processed foods and saturated fats, sedentary lifestyles encouraged by the hot climate and car-dependent urban design, high rates of obesity and diabetes, and genetic predisposition in certain populations including familial hypercholesterolemia. Smoking, stress, and insufficient physical activity compound these risks. At DCDC, we understand these local factors and incorporate culturally appropriate dietary guidance, practical exercise recommendations suited to Dubai life, and medication strategies that account for common concerns about statin therapy.

Our approach to cholesterol management is comprehensive and patient-centered. We go beyond simply prescribing a statin. We assess your complete cardiovascular risk profile including blood pressure, blood sugar, kidney function, inflammatory markers, and family history. We educate you about your specific lipid abnormalities and what they mean for your long-term health. We set clear, guideline-based LDL targets and track progress with regular follow-up testing. For patients who experience statin intolerance or side effects, we offer alternative medications including ezetimibe, PCSK9 inhibitor referrals, bempedoic acid, and combination strategies that achieve target lipid levels while minimizing adverse effects.

Understanding Cholesterol: Risk Factors, Testing, and Treatment

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that your body needs to build cells, produce hormones, and make vitamin D. Your liver produces all the cholesterol your body requires, but cholesterol also enters your bloodstream from dietary sources, particularly animal products. When blood cholesterol levels become too high, excess cholesterol deposits in the walls of arteries, forming plaques that narrow and harden the vessels, a process called atherosclerosis. Over time, these plaques can restrict blood flow to the heart and brain, leading to heart attacks and strokes. Understanding your cholesterol numbers and managing them proactively is one of the most impactful steps you can take to protect your long-term cardiovascular health.

A standard lipid profile measures four key components: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. LDL cholesterol is the primary driver of atherosclerosis and the main target of treatment. Current guidelines recommend LDL targets based on individual cardiovascular risk rather than a one-size-fits-all number. Low-risk patients may aim for LDL below 116 mg/dL, moderate-risk patients below 100 mg/dL, high-risk patients below 70 mg/dL, and very high-risk patients (such as those with existing heart disease or diabetes with organ damage) below 55 mg/dL. Advanced markers like lipoprotein(a), which is genetically determined and independently increases cardiovascular risk, and apolipoprotein B, which counts the actual number of atherogenic particles, provide additional precision in risk assessment beyond standard lipid panels.

Statins remain the cornerstone of cholesterol-lowering therapy and are among the most extensively studied medications in medicine. They work by inhibiting an enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) in the liver that is essential for cholesterol production, resulting in reduced LDL levels by 30 to 50 percent depending on the statin type and dose. Beyond lowering cholesterol, statins have pleiotropic effects including reducing inflammation in artery walls, stabilizing existing plaques, and improving endothelial function. For patients who cannot tolerate statins or who do not reach target LDL with maximum statin doses, additional medications are available. Ezetimibe blocks cholesterol absorption in the intestine and can reduce LDL by an additional 15 to 20 percent. PCSK9 inhibitors are injectable medications that can lower LDL by 50 to 60 percent and are reserved for high-risk patients. Bempedoic acid offers another oral option for statin-intolerant patients.

Prevention is the foundation of cardiovascular health, and cholesterol management is central to that effort. In the UAE, where cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, proactive screening and treatment of dyslipidaemia can prevent thousands of heart attacks and strokes each year. A heart-healthy lifestyle forms the basis of cholesterol management: a Mediterranean-style diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and olive oil; regular physical activity adapted to Dubai climate; maintaining a healthy weight; not smoking; and managing stress. For many patients, lifestyle changes alone are not enough to reach guideline targets, and combining medication with healthy habits provides the greatest cardiovascular protection. At DCDC, our cholesterol management program integrates testing, risk assessment, medication optimization, and lifestyle counseling into a coordinated plan designed to reduce your cardiovascular risk and support your long-term health.

Cholesterol and Lipid Conditions We Manage

High LDL Cholesterol

Elevated LDL (bad cholesterol) is the primary driver of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. We set individualized LDL targets based on your risk profile and use statins, ezetimibe, or other therapies to achieve and maintain optimal levels.

Low HDL Cholesterol

Low HDL (good cholesterol) below 40 mg/dL in men or 50 mg/dL in women increases cardiovascular risk. We address modifiable causes including physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, and diet, and monitor HDL as part of comprehensive lipid management.

High Triglycerides

Elevated triglycerides above 150 mg/dL contribute to cardiovascular risk and, at very high levels, can cause pancreatitis. We identify underlying causes such as diet, alcohol, uncontrolled diabetes, or medications, and treat with lifestyle changes and pharmacotherapy when needed.

Familial Hypercholesterolemia

A genetic condition causing very high LDL from birth and early cardiovascular disease. We screen at-risk individuals and families, initiate aggressive lipid-lowering therapy, and coordinate with lipid specialists for advanced treatments including PCSK9 inhibitors.

Mixed Dyslipidaemia

Combination of elevated LDL, elevated triglycerides, and low HDL commonly seen in patients with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, or obesity. We address all lipid abnormalities with a coordinated treatment approach targeting the dominant risk factor.

Metabolic Syndrome

A cluster of conditions including central obesity, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, low HDL, and impaired fasting glucose that dramatically increases cardiovascular and diabetes risk. We manage all components simultaneously for maximum risk reduction.

Questions frequentes

Questions courantes sur Cholesterol Management a Dubai.

A basic lipid profile test in Dubai is typically affordable and covered by most insurance plans when ordered by a physician. Comprehensive panels including advanced markers like lipoprotein(a) and apolipoprotein B may have additional costs. Contact our clinic for current pricing and to verify your insurance coverage for lipid testing.

Desirable total cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/L). LDL should be below 100 mg/dL for most adults and below 70 mg/dL for high-risk patients. HDL should be above 40 mg/dL for men and above 50 mg/dL for women. Triglycerides should be below 150 mg/dL. However, optimal targets depend on your individual cardiovascular risk profile, which your doctor will assess during your consultation.

For some patients with mildly elevated cholesterol and low cardiovascular risk, lifestyle modifications alone may be sufficient. This includes reducing saturated and trans fat intake, increasing soluble fiber, regular exercise of at least 150 minutes per week, weight loss, and smoking cessation. However, patients with high cardiovascular risk, very high LDL, or familial hypercholesterolemia typically require medication alongside lifestyle changes to reach target levels.

The most commonly reported statin side effect is muscle pain or weakness, affecting about 5 to 10 percent of patients. Other potential effects include mild liver enzyme elevation, digestive issues, and rarely, increased blood sugar levels. Most patients tolerate statins well, and the cardiovascular benefits far outweigh the risks for those who need them. If you experience side effects, your doctor can adjust the dose, switch to a different statin, or use alternative medications.

Adults should have a baseline lipid profile by age 20 and repeat testing every 4 to 6 years if levels are normal and risk is low. After age 40, or if you have risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, family history of heart disease, or obesity, more frequent testing every 1 to 2 years is recommended. Patients on lipid-lowering medication should be tested 6 to 12 weeks after starting or changing therapy, then annually once stable.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic condition causing very high LDL cholesterol from birth, significantly increasing the risk of early heart disease. It affects about 1 in 250 people. Signs include very high LDL above 190 mg/dL, family history of early heart attacks, and sometimes visible cholesterol deposits around the eyes or tendons. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment with high-intensity statins and additional medications are essential to prevent cardiovascular events.

Yes, diet plays an important role in cholesterol management. Reducing saturated fats (found in red meat, full-fat dairy, and fried foods), eliminating trans fats, increasing soluble fiber (oats, beans, fruits), eating fatty fish rich in omega-3s, and adding plant sterols can collectively reduce LDL cholesterol by 10 to 15 percent. However, for many patients, dietary changes alone are insufficient to reach guideline-recommended targets, and medication is needed alongside a healthy diet.

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is often called bad cholesterol because it deposits cholesterol in artery walls, leading to atherosclerosis and increasing heart attack and stroke risk. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is called good cholesterol because it helps remove excess cholesterol from arteries and transport it back to the liver for disposal. Treatment focuses primarily on lowering LDL to target levels based on your cardiovascular risk.
