Despite abundant sunshine, approximately 80 percent of UAE residents are deficient. Extreme heat drives people indoors, clothing coverage and sunscreen block UV-B synthesis, and darker skin pigmentation requires more sun exposure.
Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, muscle weakness and aches, bone pain, frequent infections, mood changes including depression, hair loss, and difficulty concentrating. Severe deficiency can cause osteomalacia in adults and rickets in children.
Below 10 ng/mL is severe deficiency requiring urgent treatment. 10-20 ng/mL is deficient, 20-29 ng/mL is insufficient, and 30-100 ng/mL is sufficient, with 40-60 ng/mL considered optimal.
For severe deficiency (below 10 ng/mL), typically 50,000 IU of vitamin D3 weekly for 8-12 weeks, then maintenance. For moderate deficiency, 50,000 IU weekly for 6-8 weeks.
