A CBC measures 20+ parameters from a single sample across three cell lineages: red blood cells (count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW), white blood cells (five-part differential: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), and platelets. It detects infections, anemia, blood cancers, nutritional deficiencies, and bone marrow disorders, making it the foundation of virtually every clinical evaluation.
No, fasting is not required for a CBC. Blood cell counts are unaffected by recent food intake, so the test can be done at any time.
Most CBC results are available same day, often within a few hours. Modern analyzers produce results in under a minute.
Low hemoglobin indicates anemia. MCV classifies the type: low MCV suggests iron deficiency or thalassemia, normal MCV points to chronic disease or blood loss, and high MCV indicates B12 or folate deficiency.
The five-part differential provides a diagnostic roadmap. Elevated neutrophils suggest bacterial infection; raised lymphocytes indicate viral illness; monocyte elevation occurs in TB and chronic inflammation; elevated eosinophils signal allergies or parasites; basophil elevation suggests allergic reactions or myeloproliferative disorders.
