X-Ray at Home

Yes. Digital X-ray uses very low radiation doses. A standard chest X-ray delivers approximately 0.02 mSv, equivalent to about half a day of natural background radiation. Our radiographers follow strict radiation safety protocols including lead shielding for the patient and anyone nearby. The X-ray exposure lasts only a fraction of a second.

We can perform chest X-rays (PA and lateral views), bone X-rays (hands, wrists, arms, legs, feet, ankles), pelvis X-rays, spine X-rays (cervical, thoracic, lumbar), and rib X-rays at home using portable equipment. For complex imaging requiring specialised positioning or contrast, we may recommend a clinic-based study.

Modern portable digital X-ray equipment produces diagnostic-quality images suitable for the vast majority of clinical indications including chest assessment, fracture detection, and basic musculoskeletal evaluation. For some specific clinical questions, your doctor may recommend a clinic-based X-ray with fixed equipment for additional views or techniques.

The actual X-ray exposure takes only a fraction of a second. Including setup, positioning, and image quality verification, the entire visit typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Multiple areas or views may add time.

Digital images are captured instantly and the radiographer can check image quality on-site. The images are then transmitted securely for radiologist interpretation. You receive a full written report typically within 24 hours. If urgent findings are detected, the radiologist contacts your doctor immediately.

No fasting or special preparation is needed. Remove metal jewellery, watches, and clothing with metal buttons or zips from the area being X-rayed. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you have previous X-ray reports, have them available for comparison.

X-rays are generally avoided during pregnancy unless medically necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks. If an X-ray is clinically needed for a pregnant patient, additional lead shielding is used to protect the abdomen. Ultrasound is usually preferred as an alternative where possible. Your doctor will advise on the safest approach.

Some insurance plans cover home-based X-ray when there is documented medical necessity, such as for bedridden patients or those with limited mobility. Pre-authorisation is typically required. Our team can check your coverage before scheduling.
