Understanding Echocardiography: The Heart Ultrasound
Echocardiography is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving pictures of the heart in real time. It is the most widely used cardiac imaging modality worldwide and provides essential information about heart structure and function without exposing the patient to radiation. The test evaluates the size of the heart chambers, the thickness and motion of the heart walls, the function of the heart valves, the direction and velocity of blood flow, and the overall pumping efficiency of the heart measured as the ejection fraction.
The ejection fraction (EF) is one of the most clinically important measurements obtained from an echocardiogram. It represents the percentage of blood pumped out of the left ventricle with each heartbeat. A normal EF is typically 55 to 70 percent. Values below 40 percent indicate significant systolic dysfunction and are central to the diagnosis and staging of heart failure. Serial echo monitoring of EF helps cardiologists adjust medications, plan interventions, and track treatment response over time.
Valve assessment is another critical component. The echo can detect stenosis (narrowing) and regurgitation (leaking) of all four heart valves. Colour Doppler imaging shows the direction and turbulence of blood flow across the valves, while continuous-wave and pulsed-wave Doppler measure flow velocities and pressure gradients. These measurements determine the severity of valve disease and guide decisions about medical management, surveillance intervals, or surgical referral.

A home echocardiogram is a portable heart ultrasound performed at your residence by a trained cardiac sonographer. It produces the same diagnostic images as a clinic-based echo, showing heart chambers, valves, blood flow, and overall cardiac function. The images are then reviewed by a cardiologist who produces a detailed written report.
Modern portable echocardiography equipment produces diagnostic-quality images comparable to hospital-based systems for the vast majority of clinical indications. Our sonographers use standardised imaging protocols and capture all required views. In rare cases where body habitus or technical factors limit image quality, we will advise you if a clinic-based study is recommended instead.
No special preparation is needed. Wear a loose-fitting top or shirt that allows easy access to your chest. There is no need to fast. If you have previous echo reports, ECGs, or cardiology letters, have them available for reference. The sonographer will need a bed or couch where you can lie on your left side comfortably.
The actual scanning takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the clinical indication and image quality. Including setup and positioning, expect the visit to last about 45 minutes to one hour total.
All echocardiograms are reviewed and reported by a qualified cardiologist. The sonographer captures the images and measurements during the home visit, and the data is securely transmitted for specialist interpretation. You receive a full written report typically within 24 to 48 hours.
Some insurance plans in the UAE cover home echocardiography, particularly for patients with documented medical need such as immobility, heart failure, or post-surgical monitoring.
