- CRP (C-reactive protein) is made by the liver and rises within hours of infection, injury or inflammation.
- A normal CRP is usually below 5 mg/L (some laboratories use below 10 mg/L).
- Values above 100 mg/L often point to a significant bacterial infection, but CRP never identifies the cause by itself.
- hs-CRP measures low levels (below 10 mg/L) for cardiovascular risk: below 1 lower, 1-3 average, above 3 higher risk.
- At DCDC, a CRP test is AED 149, with most results within 24 hours.
The CRP test is a quick blood test that shows whether there is inflammation somewhere in the body. Doctors use it to support a diagnosis of infection, to decide how unwell someone is, and to check whether treatment is working in conditions such as pneumonia or inflammatory arthritis. Because CRP rises and falls quickly, it is often more responsive than ESR. This guide explains CRP normal ranges, what different levels can mean, how CRP differs from hs-CRP and how to book a CRP test at DCDC.
What is C-reactive protein?
CRP is an acute-phase protein made by the liver in response to inflammatory signals, mainly interleukin-6. Levels start to rise within about 6 to 8 hours of an inflammatory trigger, peak at around 48 hours, and fall quickly once the cause settles, because CRP has a half-life of about 19 hours. This makes CRP useful for tracking an illness from day to day.
CRP normal range and what levels can mean
| CRP level (mg/L) | What it can be associated with |
|---|---|
| Below 5 (or below 10, depending on the lab) | Normal. No significant systemic inflammation detected. |
| 5 to 10 | Mild rise: minor infections, obesity, smoking, pregnancy, poor sleep, recent strenuous exercise |
| 10 to 100 | Moderate rise: viral or bacterial infections, flare of inflammatory arthritis or bowel disease, after surgery or injury |
| Above 100 | Marked rise: often bacterial infection (e.g. pneumonia, kidney infection), major trauma or severe inflammation |
| Above 200 to 300 | Very high: severe infection or sepsis needs urgent medical assessment |
General orientation only. CRP must be interpreted with symptoms, examination and other tests.
CRP does not show where the inflammation is or what is causing it. A doctor uses it together with the history, examination and other tests such as a CBC, urine test or imaging.
When is a CRP test ordered?
- Suspected bacterial infection, such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection or skin infection
- Monitoring the response to antibiotics: a falling CRP over 2 to 3 days is reassuring
- Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease or vasculitis
- After surgery, to watch for complications
- Unexplained fever, weight loss or night sweats, as part of a wider work-up
CRP vs hs-CRP: what is the difference?
A standard CRP test measures levels across the usual inflammatory range. A high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) test measures very low levels accurately and is used to refine cardiovascular risk in people without acute illness. Based on American Heart Association and CDC guidance:
| hs-CRP (mg/L) | Cardiovascular risk category |
|---|---|
| Below 1 | Lower risk |
| 1 to 3 | Average risk |
| Above 3 | Higher risk |
| Above 10 | Not valid for risk; repeat once any infection or inflammation has settled |
hs-CRP is one factor among many; cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and smoking matter more.

CRP vs ESR
ESR is an older, indirect marker of inflammation that changes more slowly and is affected by age, anaemia and pregnancy. CRP responds faster and is more specific to acute inflammation, so the two are often used together. Our CRP vs ESR comparison explains when each is preferred.
Things that can affect your CRP result
- Raising CRP: recent infection or vaccination, injury, intense exercise, obesity, smoking, pregnancy, oestrogen-containing medication
- Lowering CRP: statins, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids and some biologic drugs (such as tocilizumab, which can suppress CRP even during infection)
- Liver disease: severe liver disease may reduce the liver's ability to produce CRP
Fasting is not usually required for CRP. If it is being tested with a lipid profile or glucose, you may be asked to fast for those tests.

الأسئلة الشائعة
A fast, useful marker, read in context
CRP is one of the most practical blood tests in everyday medicine: quick, inexpensive and responsive. Its value comes from how it is used, as part of a clinical assessment and often as a trend over several days.
If you have a raised CRP without an obvious cause, ask your doctor what other tests are needed rather than repeating CRP alone.
