Ideally, arrange home care before your surgery or as soon as your discharge date is confirmed. This allows us to review your surgical procedure, anticipated recovery needs, and create a care plan ready for your first visit. Many patients or their families contact us the day before discharge. If you have already been discharged and need support, we can often arrange a first visit within 24 hours depending on availability.

Each visit includes a structured assessment covering vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation), wound inspection and dressing change, drain output measurement if applicable, pain assessment using a standardised scale, medication review and administration if needed, mobility assessment and assistance with safe movement, bowel and urinary function check, DVT screening for leg swelling or tenderness, and nutritional and hydration assessment. Everything is documented and relevant findings are communicated to your surgeon.

Yes. Our nurses are experienced in managing all common surgical drain types including Jackson-Pratt (JP) drains, Blake drains, and Hemovac drains. Management includes sterile site care, output measurement and documentation, assessment of fluid colour and consistency, drain stripping when appropriate, and drain removal when authorised by your surgeon based on output criteria. The nurse ensures the drain remains properly secured and functioning between visits.

After each visit, your nurse documents a detailed clinical summary including wound photographs, vital signs, pain levels, drain output, and any concerns. This report is shared with your surgical team via their preferred communication method. If the nurse identifies a potential complication or concern that requires attention before the next scheduled clinic visit, they contact the surgical team directly by phone or message for guidance. This proactive communication catches problems early and keeps your surgeon fully informed of your recovery progress.

Visit frequency is tailored to your procedure and recovery stage. In the first week after major surgery, daily visits are common for wound monitoring, drain management, and early complication detection. As healing progresses and stability is confirmed, visits may reduce to every 2 to 3 days, then weekly until sutures are removed and wounds are fully healed. For minor procedures, 2 to 3 visits may be sufficient. Your nurse recommends the optimal schedule based on clinical assessment at each visit.

Our nurses are trained to detect early signs of common post-surgical complications including wound infection (increasing redness, swelling, warmth, discharge), deep vein thrombosis (leg swelling, calf tenderness, warmth), pulmonary embolism warning signs (sudden shortness of breath, chest pain), surgical site dehiscence (wound opening), urinary retention or infection, constipation and ileus, medication side effects, and signs of anaemia or internal bleeding such as excessive fatigue, dizziness, or pallor. Early detection allows prompt intervention and reduces the risk of serious complications.
