The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located at the front of the neck that produces hormones controlling metabolism, energy production, body temperature, heart rate, and many other vital functions. When the thyroid produces too little hormone (hypothyroidism) or too much (hyperthyroidism), the effects are felt throughout the entire body.
